eslite & Good Eye´s Little One-day Taipei Walking Tour ─ Western Route撰文 郭佩怜
In their hundred years of history, Dadaocheng and Ximending each have endured prosperity, decline and regeneration. Former trading port has recently attracted creators and brands who share similar values. Here, the new encounters the old, amalgamating into new life. I believe the only path to experiencing the true nature and sentiments of Taipei is to go to the west.

A day in Western Taipei║
Visit the row of old eateries in front of Tsu Sheng Temple for good, straightforward food. Savor a bowl of meat congee or pork knuckle with noodles under banyan trees and enjoy a leisurely Chinese style breakfast known only to the people of Taipei.
Head to the century-old tea shops such as Lin Hua Tai or Lin Mao Sen for good teas that make for good gifts.
Start from the northern end of Dihua Street and make your way down. Visit Li Ting Xiang, a longstanding pastry shop, and stop by the renowned mullet roe specialty shop, Li Ri Sheng. Afterwards check out new shops like Dadaocheng 259, which sells local ingredients, lifestyle brand Mogu, and creators’ base URS155 Tuan Yuan.
Go to Peacock, a restaurant located in ArtYard that incorporates Taiwanese ingredients into Eurasian, or walk to Yongle Market and find a variety of eateries in the area. I recommend Yongle Rice Paste Noodle and Fried Mackerel Soup located on Minyue Street.
Single or not, come to Xia Hai City God Temple and pray to Yue Lao for a happy love life. Walk your way through the shops, tea houses, and cafes in the ArtYard buildings then head to inBlooom for printed fabric souvenirs.
Stroll to the Nishi Hongan-ji Temple plaza and visit Rinbansyo for some Taiwanese herbal tea that will warm the cockles of your heart. Wander about what was once a marketplace during the Japanese Ruling Era, the historic site of Ximen Red House, which is now an art and cultural space with many shops on the first floor.
For dinner, a crunchy pork chop meal at Dongyi Spareribs restaurant is recommended. One can feel the fervor of the older folk and the nakasi style music. And once finished, the neighboring Snow king defies you with 70 unimaginable sweet and salty ice-cream flavors!
With vigor restored, a walkabout in the eslite spectrum wuchang store and eslite spectrum ximen store can commence. Trendy brands fancied by the young generation are found here together with the travelers´ profoundly liked souvenir section and the classic eslite bookstore (ximen store 3F).
Make the most of your day by going to craft beer bar Driftwood or the famous outdoor gay bar area behind Red House. For the free-spirited ones, buy a bottle of Taiwan beer to enjoy on a bridge and reflect upon your day’s journey as the cars go by.
Tsu Sheng Temple
A secret breakfast location privy only to experts
The most precious dining scene in Taipei has to be under an old banyan tree in front of a Matsu temple, sitting on a stool and savoring flavors that have not changed in decades. I recommend Yeh Family’s meat congee and stewed meat, Hsu Family’s knuckle and noodle or pork chop stock soup. Every eatery there is great so order whatever strikes your fancy.
The joys of tea
Fourth-generation century-old tea shop
Lin Hua Tai and Lin Mao Sen used to be the same tea shop, but after a division, the former stayed in the historical old building and the latter set up a newly designed shop next door. Although their exterior appearances differ, both shops welcome you with rows of buckets of tea, with the variety and price clearly labeled. Their attentiveness to customers has also remained the same, so you might as well check out both shops.
A grand tour of Dadaocheng stores
The most characteristic part of town
As soon as you set foot on the historical Dihua Street, you are met with a myriad of smells coming from rows of long-standing shops selling Chinese medicine, groceries, and dried goods. I highly recommend the mullet roe specialty store that is well-loved by tourists, Li Ri Sheng; also the century-old pastry shop, Li Ting Xiang, famed for their cream puffs and wellness turtle (peanut sesame cake); and Lin Feng Yi Trading Company, who sells traditional bamboo utensils. In addition to Dadaocheng 259, an establishment helping farmers to trade, the lifestyle brand MOGU and the Asian handicrafts exhibitors´ creative base URS 155 Tuan Yuan deserve a visit.
Lunch in Dadaocheng
The nostalgic eateries of Dadaocheng and Peacock, a European-Asian fusion restaurant
For light eating, Yongle Rice Paste Noodle´s bone broth is recommended, not forgetting the side dishes. Fried Mackerel Soup behind the market has slender noodles and tasty fish, don´t miss it. The main alternative to light eating is the Peacock with its homemade sauces and local ingredients matched up creatively and deliciously.
Pray for good marriage and shop for crafts
Xia Hai City God Temple to pray to Yue Lao
Xia Hai City God Temple was built in 1859 to enshrine the City God. Presently, it is not the country’s prosperity and people’s peace that believers from Taiwan and abroad come to pray for, but a good love life or marriage. The Yue Lao in this temple is famously efficacious and it is said that if you clearly state the qualities you wish for in your ideal partner, Yue Lao will send him or her your way!
A cluster of cultural spaces that emerged within a century-old commercial area
Since the end of 2010, various ArtYard buildings have been established by transforming dilapidated buildings into tea shops, arts and crafts shops, and bookstores. Making it an important community that connects Dadaocheng’s residents with its commercial strength.
Ximen Red House and Rinbansyo
Stroll back to Ximending and enjoy herbal tea at the head monk’s abode
During the Japanese Ruling era, Rinbansyo was the living quarters of the head monk at Nishi Hongan-ji Temple. A few years back, it was renovated into Eighty-Eightea, famed for their herbal teas, made of Taiwanese tea leaves roasted with flowers and fruits. Red House was once a lively market during the Japanese Ruling Era. After the war it became a traditional theater and cinema; but it began to decline. After over a decade’s worth of effort, Red House has now been transformed into an important base and platform for the creative arts. Also, Red House regularly hosts creative markets on weekends.
Dinner time
Dine on Taiwanese tonight
For those wishing to experience local Taiwanese dining with nakasi style music, there is the Dongyi Spareribs, which has served for 50 years in Ximending. Not only do they have the testiset pork chop meal, but they also have the cutest older folk serving the customers. After eating, venture forth to Snow king and dare yourself to an exclusively Taiwanese sesame seed chicken, pork foot or flossy pork flavored, salty ice-cream!
Trendy eslite
Feel the vigor of youth in wuchang and ximen stores
Arriving to Ximending which is full of young people and foreign travelers, one can immediately feel the heat: many small shops, fashion apparel vendors and movie theaters are all clustered here; even eslite comes in twos. Once satiated, stroll over to the bookshop of the ximen store, or head over to wuchang store to eye the trendiest brands young people like the most, and lastly, purchase souvenirs for friends and family on the first floor.
Nightcap
Have a night cap in a bar, or on a skybridge
Have a drink at the Taihu Brewing established beer bar, Driftwood, and have a taste of Taiwanese fruit or tea flavored, unique brews. It is equally recommended to visit the LGBT-friendly bar area behind the Red House and feel the free vigor of Taiwanese LGBT community. For more local experience, just buy a bottle of beer and enjoy it on a sky-bridge as another alternative.
