eslite & Good Eye´s Little One-day Taipei Walking Tour ─ Central Route撰文 郭佩怜
With Taipei Main Station area at its core, the central district is the liveliest in Taipei. North-bound travelers, students in a hurry and migrant workers taken root, they all display the plenitude of what is Taipei. Zhongshan and Shuanglian districts in the north used to be restaurants and general stores, but as a pleasant surprise, stylish little shops have appeared in the scenery in the past few years, with locals and tourists-alike loving the charming streets of treasure seeking.

A day in central Taipei ║
Go to Shuanglian Market and explore your brunch options: vegetable and meat roll-ups, spring onion pancake rolls, and much more. Wash it all down with a cup of herbal tea or have sweet rice balls for dessert. Also, go to the famously efficacious Wenchang Temple and pray for academic and career success.
Stroll around the market and visit men’s shoes specialty store, Oringo; and handmade leather accessories store, Sienna. Street facing lifestyle shop Chifeng28 also deserves a closer look.
For lunch, enjoy delicious American classics at Buttermilk. For vegetarian or vegan options, go to Macrobiotics for their curry ramen (and try their delicious tomato marinated with preserved plum side dish).
After strolling around Taipei´s arguably the most dynamic underground street, R97 eslite Underground, sitting down at ease and having a taste of Luguo Cafe´s fresh brews helps in taking it all in.
Explore the alleys of Chifeng Street and Zhongshan North Road. Start from Loopy, a store full of cute trinkets, and head to Lovely Taiwan, a shop that curates local goods. Go to Everyday Ware & Co which sells selected goods. Finally, head to conceptual clothing store, WUM.
For light dining delights, one can visit Yo Sushi or tuck away at the European style bistro Popina on the alley. Taiwanese chicken restaurant Chi-chia Chuang is recommended for groups.
Feeling satiated, one can explore the eslite spectrum NANXI, opened in 2018, for local and cultural products. South-East Asia section of the bookstore is preferred for finding fascinating publications to one´s liking.
When walking gradually towards the Taipei Main Station in the evening breeze, do not miss 61 NOTE – a shop established by a Japanese – and the vendor of independent publications, Wild Flower Bookstore.
In the midst of Taipei Main Station´s evening bustle, the underground passage turns into eslite taipei station store – a showcase for treasure seekers. Here one can also try the prominent, Taiwanese style shakes and smoothies from numerous brands and vendors.
Shuanglian Market
Experience the hustle and bustle of the daytime market next to Shuanglian Station
Walk up the stairs of Exit 2 of MRT Shuanglian Station and step into Shuanglian Market where groceries and eateries abound. If you manage to get there early, treat yourself to a proper breakfast at Xiang Man Yuan Minced Pork Rice. For those with a slightly smaller breakfast appetite, try a light vegetable and meat roll-up or fried dough twist. Then, make your way to Cao Sheng Yuan for a refreshing cup of herbal tea; and, if you’re still up for it, try Shuanglian Sweet Dumpling Soup for dessert.
Browse through the shops around the market
Taiwanese handmade leather shoes and lifestyle store.
Go next door to Oringo, a shoe shop founded by two passionate men, and appreciate the craftsmanship of master shoemakers. The neighboring store, Sienna, also has both individualistic and functional handmade leather products. Continuing on, the street reveals Chifeng28 with its Japanese aesthetic and habitat – an enjoyment of a picture-perfect decor and selection.
Lunch
If you don’t mind using your fingers for lunch, Buttermilk on the first floor of Amba Hotel serves up fried chicken and biscuits so delicious even granny would approve. The blueberry pie is a charmer too. Solo travelers wanting something light can head to Macrobiotics, a Japanese-style vegetarian restaurant, for curry udon or claypot mixed rice. Side dishes like pickled tomatoes are also well worth a try.
Wander around underground street
The longest underground book street in Taiwan
eslite UNDERGROUND used to be an underground book street in Zhongshan where fans of old books could make discoveries. When eslite took over in 2017, the Zhongshan book street got a complete makeover; not only did it get an attentive floor-plan, but occasionally held exhibitions and all sorts of stores have since popped up. Stationed among them is Luguo Cafe which is famous for its drip brewed coffee as it infuses the underground street´s scent of literature with the attractive aroma of coffee.
Explore the alleys
Visit a variety of cuteness-overload shops
LOOPY, founded by two youthful designers, sells a wide assortment of grin-inducing stickers and trinkets with nonsensical slogans and funny illustrations. Lovely Taiwan shop sells aboriginal-made and community-based items and produce on the first and second floor; the third floor is a service station for tourists, offering information and travel books. WUM is a concept store established by fashion designer duo, Stephane Dou and ChangLee Yugin. Not only does WUM sell pieces from their male and female clothing line, they also curate and sell locally designed products. In the confines of the second floor flats, Everyday ware & co showcases its aesthetically distinctive vintage and lifestyle selection from different countries.
Supper time
Sushi, Spanish dishes or classic Taiwanese
There are many restaurants in Zhongshan district. A hearty one for a gastronome is Yo Sushi with sashimi on rice bed as its signature dish. As for western dining, Popina, with its exquisite European cuisine, is a remarkably good choice. The editor´s best liked Taiwanese chicken restaurant is Chi-chia Chuang where one insists on ordering the chicken rice, sanwei chicken and chi-chia tofu, and as a bonus, a nostalgic egg-pudding – one can but to love!
The latest, most dynamic department store in Zhongshan District
Opened in 2018, eslite spectrum NANXI emerged as a convent to the cultural and contemporary selection needs of the Zhongshan District. Whether it’s recently started or a well established Taiwanese brand, they all are found in here. Furthermore, the fifth floor book store hosts the Eslite´s first South-East Asia section where one can perceive different scenes and sounds. This also is a sought after asset of eslite spectrum NANXI.
20:00 61 Note 與荒花 61 NOTE and Wild Flower
Inherently eccentric owners of Taipei´s little stores
Founded by Taiwanese Japanese, Mr. Yasutoshi Azuma, 61 NOTE is a Japanese and international goods select shop that also serves food and drinks; the basement is a space that often hosts exhibitions of Japanese arts and crafts. Here, an independent comics and publications vendor Wild Flower is also recommended for its selected works that emit the good taste and enthusiasm of the store´s owner.
